Goals

The goal of this event is to raise awareness among all generations of the historical significance of BMC and its ongoing influence within numerous disciplines of art and science. The events will be specifically focused on educating the participants about BMC and the contemporary relevance of the ideas generated there through demonstrations by and collaborations between contemporary artists, teachers, and technologists. The festival organizers will also work closely with educational institutions to ensure that students are provided with appropriate materials to understand the context of the events.

The festival should resonate some of the recurring themes of the multi-discipline educational experiments at Black Mountain College:

  • Art is an integral part of all Learning
  • The study and practice of Art is central to all aspects of Life
  • Learn by Doing
  • Community is best developed when it is deeply democratic

Since BMC was a model of innovation for numerous disciplines the possible directions and outcomes for this event are limitless. For this reason, artists and educators are being selected that will best

  • represent contemporary and groundbreaking work in the disciplines of education, poetry, literature, visual arts, music, dance, theater, architecture, and/or science,
  • be able to relate their work to the advances made at BMC,
  • create an intellectual bridge into the past, explaining the ongoing relevance of the BMC experiment to contemporary art forms and modes of education, and
  • invite the audience to experience and expound upon these art forms and ideas firsthand through personal participation.
It is through this process that we hope to develop in the audience a deeper understanding of Black Mountain College - not as an historic institution, but as a collection of people and ideas that forever changed the landscape of American and international culture.
