With poet Ted Pope and Musician Jason Brady

I am the warm- fuzzy wall between the church and the state…Ted Pope
Morganton-based
performance poet Ted Pope and musician Jason Brady will perform at the
Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center on Friday, July 13th at
8:00 p.m. The evening will include poetry, projections, and a musical
sound environment and will be the release event for Pope’s new CD
“Redlipstick”.
Ted Pope was born in Southwest Oklahoma at the
Altus Air Base to parents who were in the military. Later, his father
became a Southern Baptist preacher, so he was both a military kid and a
preacher’s kid. He learned about performance poetry from many childhood
experiences of being “dragged” to religious events with the iconic and
infamous leaders of that world: Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson, Jimmy
Swaggart, and Billy Graham. Ted summarizes his experiences like this:
“I know right-wing, red-state, Southern, Bible-belt, Mid-West,
Evangelical America inside and out.”
Ted’s collaborative
performance with Jason Brady at BMCM+AC is called Antarctica the New
Eden, a name taken from a series of his poems and stories.
