Description: Organizers from the Buckminster Fuller Institute and Big Picture Small World would like to meet with our community to tailor the upcoming Design Science Lab for our region (scheduled for July 19th-28th at UNC Asheville).

This is an opportunity to learn more about the Design Science Lab with the intention of inspiring a maximum number of people - across constituencies - to play an active role in both making the program a success as well as using the program to further their organization's mission. Buckminster Fuller coined the phrase "Think Globally, Act Locally", so we want to make sure that the Lab is tailored to maximize the resources, talent, and passions of our region.

Design Science Lab Overview: The Buckminster Fuller Institute and Big Picture Small World, in partnership with the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, will be bringing this year's Design Science Lab to UNC Asheville from July 19th-28th.

The Design Science Lab develops comprehensive, anticipatory solutions to global and local problems. It does this through a design and planning methodology referred to as design science inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller, the late 20th century inventor, philosopher, and designer, and other pioneers. At its core is a new way of seeing the world — one that takes a global, whole systems perspective that incorporates a commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability.

The Design Science Lab engages participants in a rigorous, collaborative, hands-on design, planning and problemsolving process aimed at developing and disseminating strategies for achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG) using present day technology and known resources. This methodological approach can also be applied at the regional and local level. This work is then presented on the last day of the Design Science Lab to members of relevant branches of the United Nations.

Highlights:

  • Be trained in the design science problem solving and planning methodology
  • Present your work to staff at relevant branches of the United Nations
  • Participate in an intensely collaboarative and intergenerational learning environment
  • Connect to a growing international network of DSL graduates and a database of DSL strategies
  • Have your work featured in a professionally published DSL report that will be sent to major NGOs around the world.
  • Receive 100+ page orientation packet and CD with reference material and movies, a digital copy the DSL report and a complimentary membership to the Buckminster Fuller Institute.
